FIRST A MESSAGE FROM NAUGHTY DOG:
If you are reading this you are most likely already an owner of
WAY OF THE WARRIOR. Congratulations, in your possession
is one of the most complex, intricate fighting games of all time.
This booklet lets you in on all of the tricks of the game.
This includes everything from the most basic moves to the most
guarded of secrets. Some of the items contained here have never
been printed elsewhere. Most of them can be found by experimentation,
but many will only be passed down from Naughty Dog to you, and
then from you to your friends.
Please share your knowledge, WAY OF THE WARRIOR becomes
more fun the more you (and your competitors) know. We must point
out, however, that the way you tell your friends about the moves
is your decision!

GUIDE TO TERMS:
Buttons: A, B, C, Left Shift, and
Right Shift refer to the corresponding buttons on your
3DO controller.
Directions: Forward and Back refer to pressing toward
or away from the direction that the character is facing
respectively. That is to say that a character facing left would
press left on the pad for forward and right on the pad
for back. Down and Up are always down and
up on the pad.
Timing: In the instructions a "then" has been inserted
when the move requires a sequence of actions and an "and"
has been inserted when the actions occur simultaneously. e.g.
Press Back then Forward and A refers to pressing
Back, then after pressing both Forward and A
simultaneously.
Sweeps: To sweep, start by pressing down, and then rotate
the pad toward forward or back without releasing
pressure on the pad. Make sure to begin at down and finish
fully on forward or back. Its a little tricky but
a standard for fighting games and once you have it, you have it
for life.
Charges: To charge, pull back (away from the other character)
and hold the joystick for two seconds (your character should be
retreating, hold b at the same time as a charge to stay still).
After charging, simultaneously press forward and the button
called for by the specific move.
(U) and (L) These Bulleted items signify that the move is either
an Uppercut (U) or a Long (L) move. Use these to achieve the Level
Fatalities.
Fatalities: Fatalities can only be used when the character stands
up dizzy from a knockdown, is near death, and the 3DO says "put
him away", or "end it", or something to that effect.
Then the attacking player must stand a certain distance away from
the dizzy character and do the fatality.

KONOTORI

Born of American Businessman Michael Cash and his wife Delores
Cash during a business trip in Japan, Jeremy Cash began his life
in the fast paced world of international business. By the age
of two he had been in over 28 countries. Tragically, his parents
would perish shortly before his fourth birthday in a plane crash
that left him barely alive in the Japanese mountains.
Rescued and adopted by a local Japanese farmer, Jeremy began his
formative years as the only gaijin (foreigner) in the town of
Kyosaka where he was raised. In order to help him, the farmer
began to teach Jeremy the martial arts. Rapidly overtaking his
master, Jeremy quickly developed his own individual techniques,
taking advantage of his seemingly supernatural light weight to
allow him to extend his talents past that of other martial artists.
Soon after his 16th birthday, Jeremy returned to witness the death
of his adopted father at the hands of the Ninja. Hired by a wealthy
land owner, the Ninja had been sent to "convince" Jeremy's
father to sell his family's land to the local baron. Swearing
to avenge his father, Jeremy disappeared into the underworld of
Tokyo to hone his skills.
Reemerging as Konotori, the "Stork", with his father's
death to avenge, Jeremy has entered the tournament for revenge
and not glory.

THE NINJA

The head of the Shitake clan of Ninjas, not much is known of the
one they simply call "The Ninja." What is known is that
his services are affordable only to the very richest, that his
methods are known only to him, and that his service record is
perfect.
The Ninja has many enemies; Konotori and the Dragon are but two.
His only "friends" are the members of his clan, and
a select group of outsiders who he has met on one or more of his
missions. It is known that one of these people is Major Gaines,
who the Ninja has found himself fighting alongside in more than
one private war. It is also known that if the price were right,
his friendship would be put aside and the Ninja would fight anyone.
Little more is known of the Ninja. Beware.

MAJOR GAINES
Nationality: Great Britain
Real Name: Simon Gaines
Age: 38

A violent child since birth, Simon Gaines was destined for the
military. No one realized exactly how good Gaines was at combat,
however, until the Military started training him in the arts of
war. He rose quickly in skill and rank, and it was not long until
the brass saw his potential for the covert operations department
of the British Military, the SAS.
Gaines moved up quickly in the SAS, and eventually he became leader
of the Iron Hawks, a quick attack unit that the SAS used in dire
situations. Often sent on suicide missions, an Iron Hawk had a
life expectancy of 1.7 missions. Gaines had survived 16 missions
before he was sent on the mission code named "Jungle Death."
Sent to South America to retrieve a kidnapped British Minister
from Carlos Bano, the second largest drug lord in the world, Gaines
lost all but one of his men fighting to enter the highest room
in Bano's hacienda. There the drug lord, gun to the ministers
head, offered Gaines five million dollars and the position of
Major of his commandos if Gaines would only spare his life. Gaines
accepted Bano's offer by placing a bullet squarely between the
eyes of the British Minister and the last member of his troop.
During his stint as head of Bano's bodyguards Gaines received
an experimental steroid injection implant from the Drug lord's
chief chemist. Activated on demand, the implant temporarily boosts
Gaines' size and strength, although use of the steroids slowly
wears at his body, and makes him more susceptible to damage during
boost periods.
Five years later, after accepting ten million dollars from Bano's
rival drug lords to assassinate him, Major Gaines is available
to those who can afford him.

SHAKY JAKE

Real Name: "Shaky" Jake Querious

Born and raised 1100 miles from the nearest neighbor in the outback's
of Australia, Jake Querious knew no other children while he was
growing up. In fact, until he was 17 his parents neglected to
inform him that there were other people on the earth besides their
family. By age six Jake was more than able to fend for himself.
Gone for weeks with nothing but his trusty staff, Jake would survive
on the meat of the snakes that were attracted to him by the rattlesnake
rattles that adorned his belt. It is these rattles that would
later earn him his nickname.
On his seventeenth birthday Jake's parents decided it was time
for him to find a wife. His father started up the Landrover, which
Jake had never seen move and had called home since eight, gave
him some money (which took some explaining) and pointed Jake towards
Melbourne. 22 hours later, slightly tired but full of anticipation,
Jake and his handy staff entered the first brightly lit building
that he saw.
Jake stood awestruck in the entrance of The Rowdyhouse bar and
grill for nearly 30 seconds before the local toughs tried to relieve
him of his money. Not thirty seconds later the proprietor was
offering Jake a shot while his staff swept out the half dozen
toughs that now littered the floor.
Jake took the shot of whisky, gulped it down, and mysteriously
blew his first fireball.
He never went home.

THE DRAGON

Chin Liu is a model martial artist. Sound of mind, body, and heart,
the young Liu quickly grew in skill and finesse, eventually earning
an apprenticeship at the Beijing Opera House. Here he has trained
with other prodigies under the best masters that China has to
offer. Graduating first in his class, two classes early, Chin
Lui's rapid kicks and punches, as well as a smattering of seemingly
superhuman skills, earned him the nickname "The Dragon."
After graduating at 16, The Dragon toured the world competing
and teaching for three years, and then began a promising career
as a movie star. The Dragon has starred in "A Kick Before
Dying", "Naked Punch", "Close Encounters of
a Violent Kind", and some of the "BloodFisted Kickboxer"
series (I, II, III, V, and VIII).
Recently, during the shooting of "A Kick Before Dying II:
Kick Me If You Can!" the Dragon barely survived an attack
by the Ninja, who had been hired by the Japanese Mafia, or Yakuza,
because of a royalty dispute pertaining to the Japanese release
of "Close Encounters of a Violent Kind."
Although above revenge, The Dragon would not mind a fair fight
with the Ninja in order to "show him the error of his ways."

NIKKI CHAN

Over 1000 years ago the god Xing Liu Chin fell in love with a
mortal girl whose beauty was so great that it inspired him to
cross the great bridge between heaven and earth. However, this
girl was betrothed to the mad magician king Quan Ming.
Furious that a mere god would try to steal away his property the
wizened mage used his powers to warp the soul of the young girl,
binding her to the Wheel of Great Transmigrations in such a way
as to insure that she would be reincarnated time after time with
no hope of release to heaven, and in such a form that even her
divine lover could not find her. Even to this day the legacy of
this great evil mars the Celestial Harmony of Heaven, causing
an unidentifiable agony among the gods.
Nikki Chan is the latest reincarnation of this tortured girl's
soul, and although she does not know why, the soul of that ancient
girl has driven her on a path that will make her known to heaven,
and therefore to her long lost lover. She has applied herself
with manic devotion to the creation of her own acrobatic style
of Kung Fu which she intends to use to vanquish all of her opponents
in the great contest. The Book of Warriors is of such renown in
Heaven that should she win the contest her name would become known
in that greater plane and her soul released from its bondage to
the Wheel of Transmigrations, allowing her to join her lover once
again.

Nobunaga epitomizes the Japanese desire for inner perfection.
The child prodigy of a Kendo Master, Nobunaga took to the sword
before walking. Rigorously schooled in classic Kendo by his parents
by day, and heading out after dark to practice and learn from
other masters at night, Nobunaga quickly became one of Japan's
foremost young Kendo champions.
Swearing off all but swordplay, Nobunaga rarely speaks, rarely
eats, and rarely sleeps. His technique has been called superhuman,
and surely some of his moves can be classified as supernatural.
Recently, Nobunaga's concentration was broken for the first time.
Seeking out foreign techniques to further his skills he was introduced
to Nikki Chan in China after watching a performance of Chinese
Opera. Upon first sight of Nikki Chan, Nobunaga felt insecure
in a way he had never felt before, and has been unable to concentrate
ever since.
Although he had shown no interest in entering the tournament when
it's existence were first revealed to him, he has now realized
that it represents what may be his only hope of either winning
Nikki Chan's heart, or ridding his heart of her forever. Ironically,
he does not know that her heart, and her soul, belong to another
far more powerful than he.

Malcolm Fox is the son of an African ambassador to France. As
a child, he rebelled against his father, and his father's impeccable
sophistication, by roaming the streets of Paris in gangs, and
eventually becoming the leader of the largest band of toughs in
Paris.
One night, while "wilding" in the streets, Malcolm's
gang came upon, and quickly began mugging, a wealthy Thai businessman.
Watching in awe as Malcolm single-handedly dispensed his three
internationally renowned bodyguards, and fearing that he was next,
the businessman made Malcolm a deal that he couldn't refuse. Without
pause Malcolm turned on his gang, and minutes later, with their
bodies littering the alleyway, he swore an oath and began his
life as a bodyguard.
While in Thailand with the businessman Malcolm spent his freetime
studying Muy Thai. He has integrated these techniques with his
street fighting and has now become one of the most sought after
bodyguards in the world.
Working for thousands of dollars an evening, and following his
employers to high society functions all around the planet, Malcolm

CRIMSON GLORY

A classic modern American biker chick, Crimson Glory rides her
iron horse across the paved planes of the Middle and Western United
States. The only daughter in a family of 12 children, Crimson
was a "tom-boy" as a child. Se showed no interest at
all in dolls or other typical "girl toys" but instead
took up wrestling and boxing to fill her time. It wasn't until
her early teens when she started becoming a woman that the men
she had hung out with started to treat her as anything but one
of the boys.
Deciding that she was not going to change her ways for anyone,
Crimson surmised that the best way to gain the guys respect was
to beat the living hell out of them. By 22, she had done just
that, one, two and often dozens at a time, in just about every
sleazy bar west of the Mississippi River.
Crimson sees the competition as just another bar filled with men,
and although seeing her in action has often been called "the
show of a lifetime", the truly wise have always fled the
bars that Crimson Glory enters.

GULAB JAMUN
Gulab Jamun was originally a full fledged member of the tournament.
Hailing from India, Gulab was trained in the arts of mind over
body and spirit over soul. During pre-tournament training, however,
Gulab's dark nature became evident.
Actually an ancient evil spirit, Gulab Jamun has survived the
centuries by possessing the most powerful creatures he comes in
contact with. Surviving for 25 years in the body of a Bengal tiger,
Gulab was hunting one morning when he stumbled upon the secluded
hut of an Indian Swami. Sensing strength of mind in the young
man, and desiring reentry into the world of humans, Gulab transferred
his spirit from the tiger into the Swami's body. Years later as
the Swami's body ages, Gulab entered the tournament to find a
new host.
Banished from the tournament for using possession as an attack,
Gulab has sworn Vengeance on the tournament denizens. Possessing
competitors, Gulab forces the strongest Warriors to his native
land to do battle with them. Beware.

THE POSESSED CHARACTERS:
BLACK DRAGON, MAJOR TROUBLE, VOODOO
For reasons known only to him, Gulab Jamun finds it easiest to
posses three of the characters in the game: The Dragon, Major
Gaines, and Malcolm Fox. These are the three characters that you
will have to defeat first before getting a crack at Gulab Himself.
Black Dragon (the Dragon), Major Trouble (Major Gaines), and Voodoo
(Fox), have the same moves as the characters that they posses.
See the corresponding non-possessed characters moves page above
for their moves. The characters act differently and respond differently
than their non- counterparts, however, so caution is advised.

ARENA FATALITIES
Arena Fatalities are special fatalities that can be triggered
on specific arenas (locations). Arena Fatalities are similar regardless
of the identity of the triggering character or which characters
the Fatality is triggered on. Activating an Arena Fatality is
similar to triggering a character fatality, except that the characters
must be in a specific arena and the attacker must use a specific
triggering trick.
When the losing character stands up from a knock down with little
remaining energy, is dizzy, and the referee says "end it"
or "put him away" or something similar, the attacking
character should follow the following triggering instructions:

Lava Arena:
This is the easiest level fatality to pull off. On the third
round of fighting (after each player has won one round), the bridges
to either side of the floating platform will retract exposing
the player to the lava. Simply push the opponent into the lava
at any time.

Bridge Arena:
The Bridge Arena fatality is achieved by simply uppercutting
the opponent off the bridge when he has entered his/her dizzy/fatality
stage. "Uppercuts" are those moves followed by a (U)
in the character move lists above, each character has at least
one.

Sunset Roof:
On the Sunset Roof Arena you can knock the opponent off the
roof, through the ceiling below, and onto the floor in a "Mafia
death." To achieve this, Uppercut the opponent FROM
BEHIND during his/her dizzy/fatality stage.
"Uppercuts" are those moves followed by a (U) in the
character move lists above, each character has at least one.

Dojo Arena:
There is a hidden spiked fan mounted on the ceiling of the
dojo. To hit an opponent into it Uppercut him WHILE
STANDING TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE ARENA. "Uppercuts"
are those moves followed by a (U) in the character move lists
above, each character has at least one.

Cliffs:
The most difficult Arena Fatality is the Cliff Arena Fatality.
To pull it off, use a Long attack on the opponent, TOWARDS
THE LAMP IN THE CENTER OF THE ARENA, during his/her dizzy/fatality
stage. "Long" attacks are those moves followed by a
(L) in the character move lists above, each character has at least
one.

MAGIC
Each Warrior has several magics. Magics are special button combos
done while taunting that cast spells to help a player. Magics
use up a certain amount of skull points, the little numbers next
the skulls on the displays. A player must have at least the number
of skull points required by a spell to cast it. Skull points are
deducted after they are used, and a players skull points carry
over from round to round. Each Warrior in the game can cast at
least half of the magics. Experiment to find out which Warriors
know which magics. To cast a Magic: make sure you have enough
skull points, Taunt (hit B and Forward at the same
time) and then while the Warrior is still in his taunting animation
hit the following button combos:
Small Health Boost (10%)

A and Back at the same time during Taunt.
Medium Health Healing (20%)
300 skull points
B and Back at the same time during Taunt.
Full Health Healing (100%)

C and Back at the same time during Taunt.

SECRET ARENAS
There are several secret arenas in the game. To play these arenas
a special Name must be entered in the NAMES entry box in
the Main Menu along with a specific Birthday. Although this activates
a secret arena, to actually play on the arena it must be selected
in the ARENA selection area of the Main Menu. The secret
arenas work only in two player mode.
The following codes must be entered in the NAMES section
of the main menu EXACTLY as they appear below:

Enter: TUGAWAR 4/16/64 (no spaces in "TUGAWAR")
Psychedelic world

FIGHTING THE SECRET CHARACTERS
There are four secret characters in the "tournament mode"
of WAY OF THE WARRIOR. The four characters must be fought in sequence.
In order to fight each additional character you must have beaten
ALL OF THE PREVIOUS CHARACTERS. Each secret character is drawn
out on a particular arena by performing a special trick.
All of the tricks are done during the SECOND VICTORY ROUND (the
second round in which a Warrior wins in an Arena), and require
that the Warrior wins this second victory round. In addition,
all of the tricks require that the Warrior possesses a SECOND
WIND, acquired by performing a "perfect round" in a
previous round. SECOND WINDS appear over a Warriors Power Bar.
The following are the Tricks for each of the Characters:
Black Dragon- triggered on the Graveyard (second
match),. Win the second victory round, have a SECOND
WIND and do not use C or Right Shift (the kicks)
for the entire round.
Major Trouble- triggered on the Lava Pit (fourth normal
match). Win the second victory round, have a SECOND
WIND and do not use B (block) for the entire round.
Voodoo- triggered on the Roof (sixth normal match). Win
the second victory round, have a SECOND WIND and do
not use A or Left Shift (the punches) for the entire
round.
Gulab Jamun- triggered on the Cliffs (eighth normal match),
Win the second victory round, have a SECOND WIND
and have a PERFECT ROUND (take no damage).

PLAYING AS SPECIAL CHARACTERS
All of the characters in the game can be played in 2 player (versus)
mode. To play each of the boss and secret characters a special
Name is entered for each Warrior in the NAMES entry box in the
main menu along with a specific birthday.
This will activate the special character, but to actually play
as the character you must go to the character selection screen.
In a spot to the right of Crimson Glory there is an invisible
character selection box. You must move the cursor to the right
of Crimson Glory in good faith and the special character will
appear above. It is possible to enter more than one secret code
and play special character versus special character. Continue
pressing right of Crimson Glory to bring up additional secret
characters.

COOLS
Cools are special victory poses that many characters have. If
you do the correct tricks during the second victory round of a
match (the second round in which your Warrior wins), in two player
(versus) mode, then you will see the cool instead of the regular
continue art.
To see cools, in 2 player mode on any arena, win a second round
and do the following:
Cool Jake - hit your opponent with 3 fireballs during the
second victory round
Cool Dragon - win the second victory round without taking
any damage and do not use Left Shift, Right Shift, B, sweep-forward,
or sweep-backward
Crimson cool - win the second victory round without using
the A, C, Right Shift, or Left Shift. This means
that you must use only Crimson's block attacks to win.
Nobunaga cool - win the second victory round using only
the A and C buttons
Major cool - you must let 8 grenades explode on the ground
during the second victory round. This means that the fuse on the
grenades MUST expire on their own, grenades that hit your opponent
DO NOT COUNT.

SPACE WAR
The classic game "Space War" is hidden in WAY OF THE
WARRIOR. Andy thought it would be a cool addition because during
the creation of WAY he was studying Artificial Intelligence as
a Grad Student at MIT where Space War, arguably the first video
game, was created.
Space War is activated by pressing a complex series of buttons
at the character selection screen. Two Players should each take
a joystick go to the character selection screen in two player
(versus) mode. The right player (player 2) should pick a character
and hold DownRight, A, B, C, and START. While
the right player (Player 2) is holding these buttons down have
the left player (Player 1) hold UpLeft, Left Shift,
and Right Shift.
While both players have the correct buttons held down the left
player (player 1) should press START.
When Space War Starts, up to four players (with 4 linked D-Pads)
can enter by pressing START.

OTHER STUFF
Nikki Peace Symbol - wiggle the pad and press buttons rapidly
during Nikki's "drop to the ground" win sequence and
she will show a peace sign
Nobunaga cool win dance - In the second round which Nobunaga
wins (the second victory round) he must charge up the magic star
10 times. To charge his star, press A rapidly while throwing
the normal slow star. The magic star glows.
Magic Antenna: A secret magic antennae is present on the
Sunset Roof. To get the antenna, have 100 skull points, taunt,
and press A and C very fast while taunting. Starting
to press A and C fast before beginning the taunt
helps. If the magic is done skulls will fly out of the character
and the antennae will appear.
Old funny Konotori sounds: Konotori has 2 moves which have
strange optional sounds. These moves are the Swan Dive (down
and R in the air) and the Blade Roll (down, down-back,
back, and R). To get the strange sounds you must press
both A and C very fast while doing the moves. This
is easier if you rapidly hit A and C before performing
the move.
Pressing Right Shift and Left Shift at the same
time while the NAMES entry box in the Main Menu will clear
all the high scores from memory
Pressing Right Shift and Left Shift at the same
time while the SKILL menu on the Main Menu will toggle
which D-Pad is on the right and left. Normal is Player
1 on the left. Toggle to put player one on the right.
