Keep brigades and their commanders close together. Your units will fight better when they are adjacent to their own brigade. Brigade commanders have a positive effect on units in the surrounding hexes. This is especially important during melee and when checking morale against disruption and rout.

Surround enemy units to destroy and/or capture them. Units have a "zone of control". Opposing units must stop upon entering a "zone of control". Units with a failing morale check cannot retreat from a "zone of control". Once caught in the "zone of control", these units are trapped. This is an easy way to inflict lots of casualties without causing extensive damage to your own units.
