The Horde strategy

General hints:
Sell back items before moving on to the next land. When a cow, fence, pit, knight, or other item is dug up, money equal to what it cost to place that object is returned. In the Shimto Plains at the winter of Year 3, make sure all items are sold. The Tree Realms portion of the game ends at Year 4, so sell the items in the winter of that year. Each subsequent "land" lasts one year longer than the previous one.

A cow will only make money if its tail is wagging. If a cow is standing still, move it somewhere else or try digging to remove the rocky ground that appears after the grass has been grazed. Cows can keep grazing if they are not placed too closely to each other.

Only Adolescents will attack in the Spring.

After a hordling is killed, run over the corpse to pick up any gold coins that may appear.

Juggernauts will not turn and face Chauncey unless he gets too close. Walk behind them and attack from the rear. Use the meat chops to distract or slow them.

Shaman hordlings should be killed as soon as possible. They may resurrect dead hordlings or turn knights and archers against Chauncey. They must be hit three times to be defeated. Hit errant knights or archers once to return to normal.

The snowballs rolled by the Ice hordlings can be destroyed with the sword.

Shimto Plains:
There are no hidden items. Start off by chopping down trees and planting as many saplings as possible. Repeat this for a few seasons until a cow can be bought. Place cows in the south of the village, as hordlings often attack from the north. Keep buying cows and planting saplings until ten or more cows are stocked by the end of Year 3.

Tree Realms of Alburga:
During the Spring of Year 1, cut down as many trees as possible; concentrate on the area surrounding the village. Then, during the following seasons, plant saplings until the inventory box states "at max". Plant more saplings to replace any that the hordlings destroy. After a few seasons, the Dryad will give Chauncey the Boots of Boogie.

Fetid Swamps of Buuzal:
Note that two types of trees are present. The mangrove-appearing tree holds back the swamp and should not be cut. The normal-appearing tree may be harvested. If water is uncovered, use the dig function to create land. Plant trees in abundance to expand the land area. Do not fight in the swamp, as the crocodile hordlings can move faster than Chauncey and can attack while in the water.

Watch where the frogs dive into the swamp. There is a chance that gold or gems can be dug up at those locations. Sometimes digging twice will reveal more treasure.

Around the Year 3 the map will become large enough to show two "arrows" made of stones (apparent on the overview map). Dig at the intersection of these two invisible lines to find the Magic Flute. This is probably the most useful (and annoying sounding) items in the game. The hordlings will often attack from the east.

Kar-Nyar Desert:
Keep making those waterways! Tunneling hordlings can not cross water. Combined with a wall, this will keep the village safe from attack.

A tree will grow when water is channelled to an odd-looking bush, which grows in a random spot in the desert. The tree frog wants the three foods that are found scattered around the desert: the Blue Fruit, Green Meat, and Purple Seed. Just plant them next to the tree and he will give Chauncey his Trident.

Frozen Wastes of Vesh:
Use bombs to blow away the snow in the preparation stage (this is the only land where bombs may be used during this stage), or summon Roscoe to melt away huge strips during the battle stages. Be careful with Roscoe. He levels houses very quickly. Chauncey only needs to hold off the hordlings until the end of the sixth year.
