1. Downtime notice - Oct. 17, 2017

Well, it's a permanent downtime. After 22 years of service it's time for a final goodbye. Our live production servers will be taken offline on October 17th. The simple fact is that there are plenty of better ways to get the secrets hidden in games and connect with other gamers. There are plenty of Youtube channels and Twitch streams that will show games played at their best, something that plain text and screenshots can't convey. If you want to connect to other gamers outside of those services, there are plenty of Discord servers that offer a direct and engaging community experience.

Please visit our friends at GameFAQs.com or IGN.com for information such as codes, guides, reviews, etc. They're the real deal and have always been respectful and honest about how they operate. Our ghost pages can be found on Archive.org for those times that you'd like to take a look back at how things were.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed content and time managing our community, and especially to you, our dear visitors!

    Hi there

My first time playing this game hearing a lot of things about upgrading just wanted to see if I'm going in a good direction with it.

I just got to my first bench and added upgrades to my suit, the Kinesis (slow time) and my Cutter (first gun you get) I was told to upgrade the cutter as much as you can cause it apparently can cause 1 hit as it goes along. Which other guns should I invest in? Are there any other suits that are better as the game goes along that I should get?

    Thanks in advanced

Kinesis doesn't slow time. It's used to slow down enemies and items for a time. Kinesis is better for later levels and harder difficulties. Upgrade the cutter. A fully upgraded Plasma Cutter is OP as hell as long as you can aim.
Upgrade the Cutter in this order:
    Damage, Capacity, Speed, Reload.
Of course you'll have to get through some speed and reload upgrades to get all the damage upgrades, but that's a great help.

Bonus Tip: Do not waste your nodes on Air. The amount of time the game gives you at the start is sufficient enough, you're rarely in oxygen depleted areas, and there's always enough Air Stations spread out in areas where you'll need them. I wouldn't waste space in your inventory with air canisters either.

Any other questions about Dead Space, feel free to keep posting them here. I know my Dead Space... as long as it's not Dead Space 3.

    Edit: Missed that last part:
Don't buy guns at the store, you'll get them at some point.
Prioritize weapon ammo and upgrades on the Plasma Cutter, Force Gun, and the Plasma Rifle.
The Flamethrower is garbage, the Line Gun doesn't kill as well as one would like, the Ripper is situational, and Contact Beam ammo is expensive and takes a lot of space in your inventory.

    Think of it like this:
    - The Plasma Cutter is your pistol, except it's much better than most pistols in shooters, especially when fully upgraded.
    - The Force Gun is your shotgun with a grenade launcher.
    - The Plasma Rifle is your machine gun with a terrible secondary fire.
    - The Flamethrower is a flamethrower that eats through ammo like no other... the secondary fire just empties an entire tank at once.
    - The Line Gun is just a really wide horizontal cutter that lacks precision, with another awful secondary fire.
    - The Ripper is your chainsaw, the secondary fire lets you shoot those little blades out, but it's not efficient.
    - The Contact Beam is your rocket launcher (or if you're familiar with Halo 3, it's exactly like the Spartan Laser). The secondary fire is a great weapon if you're surrounded, as it destroys anything within striking distance, but the weapon is extremely slow.

Thanks dude I have been upgradeing my Cutter equally between Damage,Capacity, Speed, and reload. I will def need help later on, a friend told me there is a boss (I think chapter 3) that you have to run away from because there is no way to dismember or kill it

I need to correct myself on one aspect: Kinesis doesn't slow things down, it allows you to move stuff, it's like telekinesis. Stasis is the ability that allows you to slow down enemies and whatnot.

Definitely don't waste your nodes on Kinesis, you'll rarely use it. Use maybe one or two on Stasis when you have an abundance of nodes.

It's not really a "boss". You get to kill it twice, and it's not even the worst thing you have to deal with. Just shoot off the limbs or blow it apart with the Force Gun and hit it with Stasis and it's easily managed.

In Dead Space 1, always upgrade your suit when you can.
