1. Downtime notice - Oct. 17, 2017

Well, it's a permanent downtime. After 22 years of service it's time for a final goodbye. Our live production servers will be taken offline on October 17th. The simple fact is that there are plenty of better ways to get the secrets hidden in games and connect with other gamers. There are plenty of Youtube channels and Twitch streams that will show games played at their best, something that plain text and screenshots can't convey. If you want to connect to other gamers outside of those services, there are plenty of Discord servers that offer a direct and engaging community experience.

Please visit our friends at GameFAQs.com or IGN.com for information such as codes, guides, reviews, etc. They're the real deal and have always been respectful and honest about how they operate. Our ghost pages can be found on Archive.org for those times that you'd like to take a look back at how things were.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed content and time managing our community, and especially to you, our dear visitors!

I've got an exam tomorrow and another one Thursday unfortunately. I've got two weeks off after that, though.

I saw you on last night, man, but I wasn't planning on staying on for long. What's your plans for the rest of the week?

Jamie and I played some more Gears earlier. We completed the first act and then the second, so it was a pretty successful haul. Apparently there are 5 acts, Jamie.

Then that's three more for us to kick ass in.

The second act was much better than the first, both in terms of flow and design. Looking forward to finishing this game off.

Yeah, definitely. If we can do at least one act per session then that would be good. We seemed to get a feel for it as it went on. Our progress was pretty slow when we first started, but we found the easiest ways to kill the enemies and developed more tactics than just sit behind cover and shoot occasionally.

Yeah we definitely started to meld together a bit about half way through the Act, which bodes well for the future. That last set piece defending the walls was poetry in motion with me sniping enemies at the back and you throwing unerringly accurate grenades into the emergence holes.

I tend to find that a lot of the game in general is about not panicking. The red Gears logo filling up in the middle of the screen always seems to make me think that I'm taking a lot more damage than I actually am.

Yeah, realistically you can take a reasonable amount of damage from behind cover because you are constantly healing and it is not sustained damage. It's when you're out in the open that you die quickly.

Yes, that too. Such as the hilarious moment where you mis timed your dive and went straight into a patch of midnight black.

It wasn't mistimed. The timing was perfect. It was just the direction that resulted in Dom's head bouncing off some sort of statue before trying to take cover behind him as a swarm of destructive bat-like creatures went straight for him that was less desirable. :D

Slightly less successful with Act 3. There was a LOT of close quarters combat and I kinda let the team down with it. I think I probably died about ten times to Jamie's two or three. Maybe even more than that.

But, hopefully, all that it will need is taking a step back, deep breaths and a calm outlook next time.

It was a more frustrating session tonight. To be fair though the Act itself isn't nearly as good as Act 2. I'd describe it as a lazy design personally. Hopefully when we push on from this Act 4 will increase the quality again.

Yeah, it was just a lot of narrow tunnels, which made it difficult to play tactically and more up to luck.

Cool. I'll actually log on now; don't have a lot of time, but probably enough to finish this bastard of an Act, and maybe do a bit of the fourth one.

Sounds good. I'll be waiting. :paranoid:

Completed Act 3. Having died about 5 times at one particular part last time, we did it first time today, so that was encouraging. Jamie's developing a weapon-crush for the torque bow.

I really am. I didn't think I would like it, but the first time I used it I had an excellent streak where I was more or less stood in the open and picked off about four souped up soldiers in a row as they popped up out of cover. I like that weapon.

It seems a lot more difficult to aim than the standard weapons. I'll just stick to my shotgun, I think.

There was one epic moment that saw Jamie fighting off swarms of wretches while trying to avoid and drive back the corpser. After a few minutes of doing this, he revived me, only for us to realise that we could have just shot the smashable clamps and that would have ended the fight.

Yeah that was entirely unnecessary awesomeness. I had five or six wretches on me and was diving all over the place, managed to revive Andy, only for me to shoot one inanimate object and end the fight. I am amazed I managed to survive that attack by the wretches, so I would have liked it to be a bit more significant.

Well obviously that didn't work. Pretty busy week coming up. I will probably have some time today, though, if you're around.

Jamie and I had a pretty successful stint. There was some deaths, sure, but after the initial frustrating period, we managed to progress relatively quickly. Unfortunately, though, I got disconnected. Just checking over the chapter contents page on the Gearspedia website and I think that we had killed all of the enemies and were literally ten steps or so away from ending the act.
