-Introduction-
| Welcome
to the Crash Team Racing Strategy Guide. This is my first Strategy
Guide and I hope that you can hang in there while I learn the ropes.
First of all, let me explain that I love Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo. When I heard about the Crash kart game I was very excited. A chance for a great kart game, on the Playstation, and it could be everything that other clones weren't - fun. It's easy to say that I was not disappointed in the least, CTR is great. Truely fabulous and an instant classic for Playstation fans everywhere. I could say, without a doubt, that this is the best kart game for the Playstation. Now I can probably also say that this is what many other kart clones, including Mario Kart 64, could have been, but weren't. And just maybe, without being too brave, I can say that this passes up the father of them all, the grand classic itself, Super Mario Kart. I'm not puting down the classic Mario Kart, not in the least, but I think that Crash Team Racing retains everything from Super Mario Kart, brings it to the 3D world, and keeps the game wonderful. Check out more of the connections between Crash and his kart buddies at A Final Comparison. Now, about guides in general.... The one thing that I hate is when Strategy Guides, FAQ's, and Walkthrough write things that are available in the book. Now, I've never seen the book (I just rented this game) but I believe that all the lame information that would be in the manual is stuck in one section. Anything real simple will also be placed there. If you own the game, then don't read there. But if you were like me, renting it without the book, then check it out in Basic Information. |
-Version History-
|
| If
you find that any information is incorrect or you would like me to add
something that you feel would benefit this guide, please email me at spoon@home.com.
Note: All the information presented in this guide is based on a four day rental and a few things from other FAQ's. In those four days, I finished the Adventure Mode with 100% and almost got all Gold Relics. I had 5 of the seven secret characters and you can read below on how to get them all. I've read about 4 new battle arenas, but after the 3 Cups were completed in Arcade Mode, I had only unlocked 3 new ones. If anyone has info on this fourth stage - please email me! Eventually I will have the game, and then I will be able to complete this strategy guide. Special thanks to JBGainz. |

2. Background
Whats gioing on here
==================================================================
-What's the Story-
|
As the game opens, an evil alien named Nitros Oxide arrives in Earth's
solar system. Bent on world domination (and yearning to turn our
entire planet into a cement parking lot) Nitros Oxide has an ultimatum,
he states that if anyone can beat him in a race, that he will leave peacefully
(sounds simple right? - yeah right!).
Now it's just up to Crash and the gang to take this menace down. But, who should be the one, who can send Nitros home crying? Well, the only right way to find out is to have a race! Choose your racer and face destiny as you compete to will trophy and keys, ultimately working up to face Oxide himself. Good Luck! |
-Crash and the Boys-
| Crash Bandicoot (8/96)
- The first Crash game. Neo creates Crash and tosses him out as a
reject of his experiments. Crash returns to destroy Neo so that he
can free his bandicoot girlfriend, Tawna.
Early sketches become finalized characters and stages. What happens is a Crash craze. The game sells hundreds of thousands and becomes Americas best selling Playstaion game. Crash becomes Playstaions mascot. Early stages of this game, later found to be too difficult, are placed ontop the trhird island. 1st appearances of Crash, Neo, N. Brio, Ripper Roo, Papu Papu, Pinstripe, Aku-Aku, and Tawna. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex
Strikes Back (11/97) - Cortex, after falling from his exploding shjip,
discovers new purple Crystals. Neo has no one to turn to and tricks
Crash into retrieving the Crysatls. He kidnaps Crash and tells him
that he is going to save the world with them. Boy, is that Crash
gullible, or what?!?!
Crash Bandicoot Warped
(11/98) - The sequel to the sequel. We find out that Neo is a
subordinate to Uka-Uka, an evil version of every best friend Aku-Aku.
In this one, N. Trophy and Neo are traveling through time and its up to
Crash to stop their evil plan from succeeding.
Crash Team Racing (10/99) - This is the game that this Guide is all about. The final game featuring that beloved hero - Crash (so they say). 1st appearances of Nitros Oxide. |

-A Few Missing-
Don't get me wrong, I love the selection of the karts. Fake Crash
totally surprised me. Penta Penguin is very cool!!! The bosses
are fun to use. I unlocked N. Tropy and he's great. But, I
wish that they had included a few more good guys. For instance, ever
wondered what happened to Tawna. After the first Crash game she dissapeared.
She'd make a great kart racer. Well, Universal said that she had
to be absent from all future Crash games (which is wierd since they allowed
the bandicoot Trophy girls and they're much worse - Bandicootboy Magazine
models!!!) Another one I wish I could play as is N. Brio, but at least
all his chemicals and stuff are in the game. I never actually played
the orginal Crash Bandicoot, but there was a boss named Koala Kong, where's
that Kart. Oh well, the game doesn't have have it all, and it still
rocks!

4. Weapons and
Powerups
These are the items found inside
Question Crates
==================================================================
-Basic Items-
|
|
|
|
| Normal - Pretty simple - aim, fire, BOOM! There is also the triple BOOM! | When Juiced - The explosion becomes larger, and getting mutliple enemies becomes easier. |
| 1st Appearance - Crash 3 (Pirates ships shot them) | Mario Kart Clone - Green shell (mostly, you can't lay down the bomb and it explodes on contact with anything) |
|
|
|
| Circle: Rolls forward
until it hits something, i.e. an opponent
Circle + Down: Rolls backwarduntil it hits something. Circle (While bomb is rolling): Detonate bomb early. |
Well, its called something like, drive good. Also, if you drive predictable, straight lines, you become much easier to pin point with a bomb. You can shoot something at a bomb to blow it up before it hits you, are drop something if its going to hit your back. |
|
|
|
|
| Normal - Heat seeking missile of desstuction. | When Juiced - The missile seeks the opponent better and faster. |
| 1st Appearance - Crash 3. N.Gin space ship shoot these. | Mario Kart Clone - Red Shell |
|
|
|
| Circle: (Race Mode)
Tracks the opponent one position in front of you.
Powerslide + Circle: (Race Mode) This can take out the guy behind you, if your good. Experts try this out. Circle: (Battle Mode) Tracks opponent in the centermost point of your vision. |
99% of all missiles come from behind. When the arrows are real close on your lock-on detector, drop a beaker, bomb, or TNT behind you. If you do it correctly, the missile will hit the object instead of you. Also, try sliding around corners quickly or driving real close to a wall. Experts, try hopping with L1/R1 right over the explosion. It's all timing. |
|
|
|
|
| Normal - Drop it or toss it, but don't hit you own! Oh the humility!!! | When Juiced - Poisoned, becomes red. After collision a rain cloud slows you down for a few seconds. Also, your weapon will re-randomize. |
| 1st Appearance - Crash 1 (When isn't N. Brio messing with chemicals) | Mario Kart Clone - Banana Peel |
|
|
|
| Circle: Sets potion
behind kart. Useful for stopping Bombs and Missile hiting you from
behind.
Circle + Up: Tosses potion forward. Nothing says skill like a potion in the lap of another kart! |
I must go back to an earlier point. It's just called driving good. You can also blow them up, that's pretty pointless sense it wastes both powerups, the beaker and whatever you destroy it with. |
|
|
|
|
| Normal - Good guys get Aku-Aku, bad guys get Uka-Uka. | When Juiced - Aku-Aku/Uka-Uka last much longer |
| 1st Appearance - Crash 1 (I hope this was obvious) | Mario Kart Clone - Star (You even get the extra speed) |
|
|
|
| Circle: Aku or Uka spins around you making you inviincilble (and also a battering ram! FUN) Also, the speed can help you get a lot of the short-cuts much more easily. | Don't get near a kart that has one of them flying around it. Simple and obvious - hopefullly |
|
|
|
|
| Normal - The best thing about this item is it's nuisnace factor. Hop, hop, hop, hop, grrrrrrr..... | When Juiced - Becomes the Nitro Box. No hoping to save the day here. Touch and KABOOM! |
| 1st Appearance - Crash 1 (But the Nitro Box first came from Crash 2) | Mario Kart Clone - Nothing really.... wow |
|
|
|
| Circle: Sets the
crate behind you. One of the lamer power-ups.
L1/R1:: If you hit one, jump rapidly to toss it off your head. That will cause it to go behind you and explode. Experts - Try tossing it off your head onto the guy behind you. |
Don't run into them. And if it's TNT, hop, hop hop with L1 and R1. It's similar to the beaker. You can destroy it with one of your items, but strategically it is a waste to do so. |
|
|
|
|
| Normal - This is arguably the best item - it's so versatile. When isn't this good to get. It will fade away, though. | When Juiced - Becomes blue. Shield stays on indefinately. |
| 1st Appearance - Crash 3. Neo was in a blue shield on his boss stage. | Mario Kart Clone - Nothing. |
|
|
|
| Circle: Turns on
the bubble. You are invincible for one hit. This can be used
to block one attack or to ram an opponent.
Circle (After armed): Shoots the shield as a weapon. |
Just like Aku-Aku/Uka-Uka, stay away. If you want to get rid of the shield shoot it. The best way is to use Aku-Aku/Uka-Uka because he has priority, the shield is destroyed but Aku-Aku/Uka-Uka remains! |
|
|
|
|
| Normal - Jet off with great speed - pop-a-wheelie! | When Juiced - Turbo lasts much longer. |
| 1st Appearance - Crash Team Racing (Whatd'ya expect) | Mario Kart Clone - Mushroom |
|
|
|
| Circle: Varoom and
your off with a bang (and a firey exhaust)
Circle (When behind enemy):You will squish you enemy and fly over them. This is one of the best attacks in the game!!! |
Not Applicable |
-Race Mode Only Items-
|
|
|
|
| Normal - Travels down the track and takes out the kart in first place. | When Juiced - Hits all opponents that are ahead of you in the standings. |
| 1st Appearance - Crash 3 (Hey, its a warp thing, it's related to Warped) | Mario Kart Clone - Nothing, but there's a 1st place shell in Mario Kart 64. |
|
|
|
| Circle:- Fires the
Warp. It's self guiding and flawless.
Note: If your in last place, your more opt to get this item. In otherwords, the percent to get this item increase the farther back in the race you. |
Before it gets to you drop into second place, then someone esle will get hit. But, if it's the Juiced variety, then the only solution is a shield or Aku-Aku/Uka-Uka.. |
|
|
|
|
| Normal - The screen warps and everyone is slowed down. | When Juiced - Lasts much longer |
| 1st Appearance - Crash 3 (Related to N.Trophy somehow) | Mario Kart Clone - Lightning Bolt (But you can't squash 'um) |
|
|
|
| Circle: Uses the
clock. You go faster and get into first place. Wow.
Note: If your in last place, you get this more often. In otherwords, the percent to get this item increase the farther back in the race you. |
Where a shield or Aku-Aku/Uka-Uka |
-Battle Mode Only Items-
|
|
| Normal - Really good turbo. This makes your max speed always be turbo | When Juiced - Lasts longer. |
| 1st Appearance - Crash Team Racing | Mario Kart Clone - Nothing. |
|
|
|
| Circle: Click and Varoom! off you go. | Not Applicable |
|
|
| Normal - Turns you completely invinsible to other karts. Can't be locked on by missiles but you can still take damage.. | When Juiced - Lasts longer. |
| 1st Appearance - Crash Team Racing | Mario Kart Clone - Ghost (But you don't steal) |
|
|
|
| Circle: Poof! - only your wheels are left. Complicated, huh? Th best combo is this with Aku-Aku/Uka-Uka - steathy death!) | Not Applicable |
|
While I was playing Crash I immediately noticed the similarites of the
weapons between it and Mario Kart. With one exception - no Jump.
In Mario Kart you could hop with a powerup and get to some secrets and
shortcuts. But, in an early Beta shot of the game, there was
a picture of Tiny and in his icon box was a large spring (see below, the
actual picture is available at videogames.com).
I promise that it was not the Beta pic for a Turbo, I've seen what that
looks like. I was definately a jump equivilent. I wonder why
they removed the Spring powerup, it might have something to do with the
Jump Turbo... Also, check out the Game
Shark code that is supposed to allow you to use this powerup.
I don't have a Game Shark so if you try the code out, please tell me if
it works.
|
==================================================================
5. The Ultimate
Strategy
THE strategy to win.
==================================================================
-Get Juiced-
|
The most important thing about Crash Team Racing is speed.
You can't rely on items. If you get a weapon early on, chances are
that the kart you shot will catch back up any way. And betting on
that "perfect" weapon at the end of the race is too random. Not to
say that Weapons and Powerups aren't neccessary or useful, but top speed
should be your priority.
At the beginning of the race, always go after Fruit Crates instead of Question Crates. Get ten Wumpa Fruit as soon as you can, being Juiced is half of the secret to great speed. The other half is turbos, discussed below. But, when your not going the turbo speed, you have to race at the normal speed, having a max top speed is crucial. |
-Use Turbos-
|
Turbo is the other aspect of great speed. There are several methods
of geting and using turbos, and when you master them all, you will be unstopable.
One great example of this is on Oxides Track - You can go on that track
almost entirely on turbos if you get good enough. This is a list
of the ways to turbo, in order of easiest to hardest.
The Turbo Powerup
The Turbo Start
The Turbo Pad
Hang Time Turbo
The Powerslide Turbo
|
-Expert Tricks-
|
Throughout most Walkthrough I have putting putting down a few things that
are pretty hard to pull off regularlly. Most of these I can do pretty
well, but of few of them, I must admit are lots of luck (hehehe).
Well, in any case, here's a list of some cool things to try while competing
against your friends, really show them who's boss at CTR.

7. Adventure
Walkthrough
Where am I? Where do I
go?
==================================================================
-Adventure Mode Pointers-
|
-N. Sanity Beach-
| This is the location that your chartacter begins at. The courses here are relatively simple and this will be a good introduction into the CTR world. Also, Aku-Aku will show up frequently to give you advice. |
![]() |
Hints: This track is very simple. Just take a very close path around the cliffs and use plenty of turbos in the straightaways. | Shortcuts: After driving off the first ramp, drive through the lake and jump of the small underwater hill to hop up onto the plateu |
No requirements |
| CTR Token: Red | C - Drive up the second pirate ship near the end of the track and hop of the highest point. | T - To get this you must use the shortcut and drive down the dock. Get this on your first lap. | R - At the beginning of the track stay right as you go around the stone pilar and take the turn hard. |
| 32 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:17 | Gold: 1:05 | Platinum: 0:52 |
![]() |
Hints: Don't drive on the bumpy road to sneak past the end of the race. It's not a shortcut, it just slows you down. | Shortcuts: None |
No requirements |
| CTR Token: Green | C - After exiting the first tube, jump off the top of the hill and stay to your left. | T - Right before the finish line, drive onto the bumpy road. Get this one on your first lap. | R - This is in the middle of the track. When you see it, hop and grab it. |
| 32 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:15 | Gold: 1:05 | Platinum: 0:55 |
![]() |
Hints: Try to use the turtles that are above water, but always hop off of them to get good Jump Turbos. | Shortcuts: You can attempt to cut through the section with the stalagmites, but I have yet to see it pay off. |
1 Trophy |
| CTR Token: Red | C - During the section with the lava balls, stay to the far right and grab it off of the second jump. | T - Near the end, the is a windy section. Watch for the 'T' to be right before one of the sharp left turns. | R - Jump off the first group of turtles and aim towards the center. |
| 40 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:55 | Gold: 1:44 | Platinum: 1:32 |
![]() |
Hints: The shortcut is so hard that it is not usually worth going for. If you get an item you can set as a mine, save it for the end section and put it in one of the two narrow archways.. | Shortcuts: Hardest shortcut - You must hop off of the halfpipe, right after you enter the tubes, and the jump off the rim as you approach an opening in the wall. Timing must be perfect. |
2 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Blue | C - When the halfpipe ends in a strip of Turbo Pads, jump and stay in the middle of the pipe. | T - At the start, take the right path and then jump off the edge down to the lower level. | R - As you drive down the halfpipe, stay on the right side rim. |
| 65 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:33 | Gold: 1:05 | Platinum: 0:37 |
|
|
Hints: As with all bosses, whenever you get an item, it will almost always be missiles. Use them quickly and then restock. You'll either hit Roo and slow him down or hit a box and destroy it. Every box not on the track is a good box! |
4 N. Sanity Beach Trophies |
| Track: Roos Tubes | Weapon: Drops TNT | Average Finish Time: 2:00 |
![]() |
Hints: This one is relatively simple. First of all, casually drive around and find where all the crystals are before you work on collecting them. Also, perfect the hill jumps that allow you to grab the crystals that are high off the ground. |
Ripper Roo Boss Key |
| CTR Token: Purple | Time to Finish: 1:23 | Number of Crystals: 20 |
-The Lost Ruins-
| After completing N. Sanity Beach drive through Gem Stone Valley (you'll come back there later). You need one boss key to enter the Lost Ruins, which is all you have. The tracks get a little more difficult, but I'm sure it's nothing that most can't handle on their first few tries. |
![]() |
Hints: This is the Crash Cove of the Lost Ruins, very simple. Take your time and a good line and you'll have no problems here. | Shortcuts: None |
4 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Green | C - At the beginning, stay to the left. The 'C' will be right before a large wall. Hop around the corner after you grab it. | T - As you are exiting the long tunnel, stay to the left. | R - Near the end, you will need to hop of a small gassy hill. Don't go on the grass to early as it slows you down considerably. |
| 40 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:35 | Gold: 1:12 | Platinum: 0:49 |
![]() |
Hints: You can take some amazing jumps on this track. Experiment with hoping on the hills and you'll learn a rythym that will push you through the track at monsterous speeds. | Shortcuts: There is a stone face will teeth. Hit the teeth with a weapon and the door will open. The weapons that will do it are: Bombs, Missiles, Shields, Potions, and Aku-Aku/Uka-Uka, |
4 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Blue | C - Jump of the second ramp. Not difficult. | T - Take a short left trun through the grass on the first furn of the course. | R - You will need to enter the shortcut and jump off the edge of the cliff at the end of it.. |
| 52 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:20 | Gold: 1:02 | Platinum: 0:43 |
|
|
Hints: There are a lot of ways to take this track. I would say beginners, avoid the shortcuts and just work on getting good jumps and lots of Turbo Speed. The time you save not dying on difficult tricks will make you win. | Shortcuts: You can only take one of these shortcuts per lap. (1) Before the hairpin turn, hop at the edge of the road between the two short walls. You will land on a small column and then hop again. (2) After that hairpin turn, go to the left and jump up to a path that will cut past the plants. |
6 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Red | C - Take the first shortcut. | T - Take the second shortcut and jump as you approach the end of the path. | R - During the last hard right turn, before the long jump, hug the right side near the cliff. |
| 48 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:34 | Gold: 1:09 | Platinum: 0:42 |
![]() |
Hints: Learn both sides of the fork well and always follow the kart in front of you. Narrow passages are great for taking down the enemy. | Shortcuts: None |
7 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Yellow | C - During the first turn, stay to the inside and grap the 'C' by the cactus. | T - At the fork, take the left path and, near the end, take a hard right. Get this on you first lap. | R - On the last Turbo Jump, hop off the very right edge and keep going right. After you grab the letter, pull back towards the road. |
| 38 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:33 | Gold: 1:05 | Platinum: 0:37 |
|
|
Hints: Papu Papu is like Tiny and Dingodile, lots of speed and no acceleration. If you can get him early and pass him, it will be much easier to win than if you half to catch up to him after he is at full speed. |
4 Lost Ruins Trophies |
| Track: Papu Pyramid | Weapon: N. Brio Beakers | Average Finish Time: 2:42 |
|
|
Hints: This one is a little difficult, just due to the size at the area and its many places to hide crystals. Just make a path that you follow each time and each time you will get closer to beating it. |
Papu Papu Boss Key |
| CTR Token: Purple | Time to Finish: 1:25:00 | Number of Cystals: 20 |
-Glacier Park-
| After destroying Papu Papu head on over to colder climates. Now that you have 2 Boss keys you are allowed to enter Glacier Park. |
![]() |
Hints: The icy sections on this track are a little difficult, but if you go the right direction as you enter the ponds, you won't have a problem. | Shortcuts: As you drive onto the first icy pond, drive to the left towards a path. You will need to hop over a river, but to make the jump, you will need to Powerslide Turbo on the ice. |
8 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Red | C - Near the end of the track there are some mogiles. Hop over these and jump to the right on the last one. | T - As you approach the first high jump, drive off the track and hop off the right hand side. | R - After the first icy pond, take a hard left and grab the letter as you enter the bridge. |
| 40 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:30 | Gold: 1:08 | Platinum: 0:45 |
![]() |
Hints: Only take the mine cart path to get the Time Crate during the relic race. That railroad is not a shortcut unless you have the correct powerup! | Shortcuts: You need a juiced Aku-Aku to atempt the mine cart part. Getting squished and falling off really don't make much for a shortcut, so be careful! |
8 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Blue | C - Drive through the shallow lake. | T - At the top of the corkscrew turn right and jump off the edge to getthe 'T' . Do this on your first lap. | R - As you pass through over the railroad at the end of the track, pass through two of the pillars. |
| 39 Time Crates | Sapphire: 1:28 | Gold: 1:11 | Platinum: 0:54 |
![]() |
Hints: This is a long course. Don't get discouraged if you in last at the beginning, there's lots of time to catch up. Also, the shortcut will almost garruntee victory, | Shortcuts: After you pass through the tunnel and the seals, stay to the left and hop on the last mogile to go over the wall. |
10 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Green | C - After the road forks the 'C' is on the middle of the intersection of the two paths. | T - Jump off the last and highest Turbo Jump of the track and stay to the right. | R - In the tunnel with the seals, hop off of the hill. |
| 38 Time Crates | Sapphire: 3:00 | Gold: 2:33 | Platinum: 2:05 |
![]() |
Hints: Stay out of the mud. This the longest track in the game, and with that comes a little difficulty. | Shortcuts: None |
11 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Blue | C - ... | T - ... | R - ... |
| 60 Time Crates | Sapphire: 3:45 | Gold: 3:22 | Platinum: 2:58 |
|
|
Hints: Komodo Joe is just like Coco and N. Gin, so he'll be ahead of you at the beginning. Just race a good lap or two and you'll be within his sight. |
4 Glacier Park Trophies |
| Track: Dragon Mines | Weapons: Tosses TNT and Nitro Boxes | Average Finish Time: 2:14 |
|
|
Hints: The easiest way to grab all of the crystals is to take them in three groups. First go after the Crystals on the outer rim, then grab the ones on the lower level, and finally pick up the few on the center platue. |
Komodo Joe Boss Key |
| CTR Token: Purple | Time to Finish: 1:20:00 | Number of Cystals: 20 |
-Citadel City-
| Now that you have three Boss Key's you can get into Citadel City. This is where the most advanced (and dangerous) tracks are held. All that stands between you and Notros Oxide are these four tracks and Pinstripe. |
|
|
Hints: It not worth getting hit by barrels to take the two turbo pads, so make sure you time that section correctly. | Shortcuts: None |
12 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Blue | C - Jump after flying off the secord Turbo Ramp and stay left. | T - Take a good leap off the top of the highest Turbo Ramp and stay to the center. | R - Right after the 'C', jump during off the next Turbo Ramp. |
| 70 Time Crates | Sapphire: 2:15 | Gold: 1:34 | Platinum: 0:53 |
|
|
Hints: At the fork, I would take left path, as it is easier to speed burst trhough it. Also, learn the spiders pattern. | Shortcuts: Near the end, before the long jump, you hop over a gap to cut past the two sharp left turn in the castle tower. |
12 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Green | C - When you emerge outside the castle, you need to hop the over the corner of the road. | T - Hop off the highest jump at the end and fly to right. Get back to land before you fall. | R - As you take the Turbo Pad over the drawbridge, veer right. |
| 62 Time Crates | Sapphire: 2:35 | Gold: 2:04 | Platinum: 1:32 |
![]() |
Hints: If you remeber Rainbow Road from the Mario Kart days, then you'll know the key to this track - don't fall off the edges! | Shortcuts: On the first jump, stay to the far right and jump towards a small road. |
14 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Yellow | C - At the beginning, you will need to stay right on long third turn of the course. | T - Hop off of the Turbo Jump of the largest gap on this track. | R - You will need to take the shortcut of this track to get this letter. |
| 56 Time Crates | Sapphire: 3:05 | Gold: 2:34 | Platinum: 2:02 |
|
|
Hints: This track a speed demon. If you hit every pad, jump off every cliff, powerslide on every turn, and get lucky with the Turbo item, you can stay Turboed almost the entire time. | Shortcuts: None |
15 Trophies |
| CTR Token: Yellow | C - Hop off of the first Turbo Jump and stay in the center. | T - During the final jump through outer space just stay in the middle and hope that your high enough. | R - During the last huge jump of the track star to the far right. If you have jump enough height you will grab the letter. |
| 49 Time Crates | Sapphire: 3:17 | Gold: 2:56 | Platinum: 2:34 |
|
|
Hints: Pinstripe is an all-around driver, with no weakness or strengths. Just try to stay on the track and you should be able to take out this rat. |
4 Citadel City Trophies |
| Track: Hot Air Skyway | Weapon: Bowling Bombs | Average Finish Time: 4:12 |
|
|
Hints: The key to this is just like Rocky Road, take it in cycles. Start in the center square and drive around each ring grabbing the crystals. Also, use bombs to blow up TNT and Nirtos blocking hard-to-get crystals. |
Pinstripe Boss Key |
| CTR Token: Purple | Time to Finish: 2:00 | Number of Cystals: 20 |
-Gem Stone Valley-
| Well, you completed all of the other tracks and your ready to face Oxide. Drive back to Gem Stone Valley and enter his ship. Also, if you have all four CTR Tokens for any one color, you can attempt to win the Gem Cup of that color and unlock a secret character. |
![]() |
Hints: To get good times on this track you are going to need to have masted the Powerslide Turbo. The S, U, and hairpin turn that litter this track where made for the Powerslide Turbo. | Shortcuts: With well timed jumps or a good powerup you can hope over the stacks of tires and save yourself a lot of time. |
10 Relics |
| 45 Time Crates | Sapphire: ?? | Gold: ?? | Platinum: 1:40 |
|
|
Hints: When travels this course, hit as many Turbo Pads as possible (duh). Also, go on the outside of some turns, to the other side of the tire walls, because some of them are hiding more Turbo Pads. | Shortcuts: None (Does it really need them with all those Turbo Pads!) |
5 Gems |
| 52 Time Crates | Sapphire: ?? | Gold: ?? | Platinum: 1:19 |
|
|
Hints: Well you've finally got to him. Nirtos Oxide is a cheater. He starts before the green light goes and if you hit him with a missile all it does is slow him down a bit. Just keep going and, by the third lap, good racers will be rewarded with a win. |
4 Boss Keys |
| Track: Oxide Station | Weapons: N. Brio Beakers, Bowling Bombs, TNT, and Nitro Boxes. | Average Finish Time: 4:00 |

8. Time Trial
Mode
Speed is the only goal.
==================================================================
-The Purpose-
|
The main object of the Time Trial Mode, for me at least, is to unlock N.
Trophy to be playable in other modes. This section will define how
to do that. The chart below has several columns. The first is the
track name. After that is the time I completed the race in to unlock
N. Tropy's ghost racer. The next column is the time I got to beat
N. Tropy and unlock Oxide's ghost. The third list is my time when
I finally beat Nitros Oxide. I have only beat Oxide once,
but this list will grow!
Times that are surrounded by (parentheses) are the approximate time that you need to beat. |

9. Arcade Mode
Play in a cup with your friends
or enemies.
==================================================================
-Play to Win-
|
The Arcade Mode allows you and up to one other friend to play in a Cup
or a single race. In a one player game, you will have 8 karts racing
and with the two-player split screen mode, you will have 6 racers.
To unlock the three extra battle mode arenas (I heard of a rumored 4th
track, but I don't know what it is or how to get it) you must race in the
Arcade Mode and win 1st place in each Cup. There are four Cups as
detailed below in Basic Information.
When you begin the Arcade Mode, you can only choose Easy difficulty. After you win 1st in each of the four Cups, you will be awarded a battle stage (The Parking Lot to be more specific) and be allowed to try the Cups at the Medium difficulty. After beating them again you will recieve The North Bowl battle arena and the Hard difficulty becomes selectable on Arcade. The Hard difficulty unlocks the last battle arena, the Lab Basement. If possible, always race with a friend. Even if that friend isn't very good, you've already elliminated three computer controled karts (the one your friend is driving and the two removed from play when you are in the 2-playter split screen Arcade mode). Also, your friend can help you blast the opponents. The best thing to do is have you and your friend get 1st and 2nd every race, sucking up all the points and promising victory. But if that's not the case, there are some other options. Strategies inlcude taking out the guy that got 1st or 2nd in the previous race, so that he/she does not gain more points, effectivly removing him/her from the standings. Your friend can drive backwards and try to slow down people behind you (this was very popular around me back in the Mario Kart days). Or your friend can hang around the Question Crates laying down traps and shoting Warp Orbs and N. Trophy Clocks (just make sure if he/she fires a Warp Orb that they're not Juiced!). |

and leave nothing behind!

2 - Center of Arena |
2 - Yellow and Green Corners
2 - Center of Arena |
-Battle Mode Variants-
| Capture the Flag (er...
Rain Cloud)
This variant takes a little bit of setup. First, you'll need a track where you can set up "bases" where the flags will be held. The Parking Lot or Rampage Ruins work best, but any arena will work. Then, in setup, make sure you have on N. Brio's Potions. As a house rule we take off things that make you invunrable (shields and Aku-Aku), missiles (they make defending the flag to easy), invisibility (you got see the flag bearer), and the speed items (turbos and super engines). Make the karts two teams; i.e. 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, etc. Also, set it up as a time game and agree on how long the match will be. When you begin the game, the field is nuetral. Have all Karts get juiced and then one member of each team must find a Red Potion. This is the flag. Set it down in your opponents base. When both teams have done this, have all karts return to their own bases. The object is to drive into their base, take the potion, and get back into your own base while the rain cloud is still on! If you don't make it in time, the team that failed must find another red potion, set it in to their opponents base, and then leave the base.(no setting the potion down and then crashing into it!). First to Capture the Rain Cloud wins. If time runs out the team with the most points wins. Bomb Squad

13. A Final
Comparison
Didn't I see that somewhere before...
oh well.
==================================================================
-Super Mario Kart-
| This is just a fun chart to see how much Crash Team Racing has in common (or copied, in a way) with Super Mario Kart, the best racing kart game (until CTR that is). The greatest thing about this is that even though a lot of ideas can seem unoriginal, CTR is still a great game. The best in fact. |

-Diddy Kong Racing-
| Well, the two things similar here are the name of the game and the Adventure Mode. I don't know much else because I never played Diddy Kong Racing. |
